The ropes thing is just a showpiece to get the fans into the match some more, something done by the Ultimate Warrior many years ago. This usually is one of two signals for the end of the match as well (the Animal unleashed mentality).
The thumbs up, thumbs down actually comes from Triple H during the days of Evolution. When Randy Orton won the heavyweight championship, there was a in-ring celebration with all of Evolution present. Batista had Orton on his shoulders and Triple H gave Randy the thumbs up with a huge smile. Then, the smile vanished into a scowl and Triple H turn his thumb down. Orton was in shock when he saw this and Batista delivered the Electric Chair ... prompting Orton's dismissal from the group.
Batista later used the thumbs up, thumbs down sign when choosing between Raw & SmackDown. He signed for the match against Triple H by using the very same thumb signal to show that Batista knew what Triple H was doing. This became his second sign of the end for whomever he goes up against.
The ropes and the thumbs up, thumbs down signals are the symbolic closing moments before the Batista-Bomb. Hope that clears it up for you.

That means the match will end in about 2 minutes. He does that, clears the ring, beats the hell out of the person he is going to pin, powerbombs them, Batista slams them and pins them. Match over.

Yah the whole rope move was Ultimate Warriors.
he then incoporated his own signature which is the thumbs up thumbs down. Which started when he screwed HHH to sign up to smackdown
