My boyfriend found a snake on the side of the road... I know a little bit about snakes but not enough to tell the difference in the breeds. It has a dark brown base with lighter brown markings but it does not have the distinctive white spots that a reticulated python has. Nor does it resemble a boa...can anyone tell me how to distinguish the breeds by their markings?

A ball python has round brown spots with tan skin and is shorter than the other two.
The reticulated python is the largest and is more colorful. It has more browns and yellows.
The boa constrictor is the medium sized one and has a broad range of colors from gray to dark brown. It is the most colorful of the three and the easiest to tame.

The one your boyfriend found could be a bull snake.

It may not be any of the above. Where are you located? Ball pythons, Boas and Retics are not found in the United states in the wild unless released by someone. You probably found a rat snake, garter snake, bullsnake or even possibly a copperhead(which are venomous)but do have the coloration you describe. You should do a search for snakes in your area and see what you can come up with.
