LOL

You want to buy a vehicle for no more than $5,000? Really? Why blow $5,000 on something that will cost you another $5,000 to keep running? You might as well rent a car for when you need it. Keep the 5 k and just rent one if you don't want to pony up and get a monthly payment that's affordable. Yes at age 18 you can purchase a car and get financing for it. Not making much? No problem. As long as you have a gross monthly income of $1,400 we can get you financed on a good dependable car. Escpecially with $3,000 or more down. If you like outdoors activities, I would recommend either a Ford Escape 4 cylinder all wheel drive pre-owned 2006 for about $16,000.00 $5,000 down after taxes and tags would give you about a $250.00 monthly payment. Very affordable! It will help you establish credit that you will need when you are older, and let you ride in style.

For your needs:

YOUR best choice is probably a Subaru, preferably a wagon, without too much rust or too many miles. Rereading the question, you really need a subie wagon. They don't hold resale value well in most of the country, so you are more likely to get a newer one than several of the other choices.

I would suggest trying to find one with a turbocharger. If you go high into the mountains, you need to move a lot of volume of air to get the power you want.

Subies are lighter weight than the bigger SUVs, so are more maneuverable and less likely to bog down. Further, Subies have a low center of gravity, so they are less likely to rollover, which is a huge problem in the mountains, especially mountain roads.

And mileage isn't too bad for a very utilitarian vehicle, with a fair amount of interior room(more than a lot of suvs).

Second choice would be an Audi, but that's a distant second because of the cost of parts.

Don't buy anything too new, especially a $16,000 car that will hit you with notes, higher insurance, and a huge depreciation hit.

Since youre a girl, girls generally like used Honda Civics, are they are easy to care for. They have more trunk space too.
Toyotas are cheaper, but they dont have the same feel as someone who's sporty would like.

If you want to get a used Jeep cherokee, i recommend one from 93's-98. They have back seats that fold down, and you can camp right in them, with room to spare for anotehr person or two.
Gas prices are very pricy though, The 4 wheel drive is a plus!

All undesirable alternatives, each and every bmw thats better than 5 years previous is broke indirectly, yet in case you do not care about restore expenditures get the 2005 BMW325Ci. Youd be better off with a v6 accord so a techniques as safty/reliability/mpg, yet you're 15 so get besides the reality that vehicle can make you look the best and your friends the most jealous.

You should be able to get a 1994 - 1996 Jeep for $5,000. It will have about 80 to 120 thousand miles but if you take care of it you will love it!

Look for a mid 90's Toyota ForeRunner or Nissan Pathfinder.
The Forerunner may be difficult to find in good condition under $5K, but it is possible.

My neighbor just sold his 95 Pathfinder, with 101,000 miles on it, for $3,200 in good condition. It will go another 75-80K miles.
