my boyfriend and i are visiting montreal and the three things we really would like to do are visit a microbrewery, a sing-along bar, and good poutine (he had some at burger king and is now slightly poutine jaded). Any recommendations?

For microbrew you can't beat the Cheval Blanc (whitehorse) brewery. Here's a Google map link:http://www.google.com/maps?hl=en&lr=&safe=off&rls=GGLJ,GGLJ:2006-17,GGLJ:en&q=cheval+blanc&near=Montr%C3%A9al,+QC,+Canada&radius=0.0&latlng=45512363,-73675627,8434356017592735739&sa=X&oi=local&ct=result&cd=1

hope it works - or just cut and past it into your browser...

The best poutine is invariably NOT in the chain shops, even the authentic sounding ones. Go to the Montreal Pool Room or any of those on St-Laurent just below Ste-Catherine. If you like smoked meat I go to Dunns and ask for Smoked Meat Poutine - they chop it right there and spread it al over the top of a huge serving (hint: its bigger when you ask for take out).

Then there's singing bar.... well, I like the Boite A Marius - real french Quebecois fun and raucous atmosphere (the later the better) and the beer is cheap. Sundays is unplugged night and its the best night for this kinda fun. The site is here if you read french: http://www.laboiteamarius.com/index.html
if not the map link is this: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=5885+AVENUE+PAPINEAU,+MONTR%C3%89AL,+QC+H2G+2W5,+Canada&ie=UTF8&ll=45.546154,-73.590803&spn=0.025306,0.070896&om=1

have fun and welcome to Montreal!

I don't know, but if you are into micro-brews Portland OR has more mocrobreweries per capita than anywhere else in the states.

My favorite is made in p-town.

Wiedmeir Heiffefisen (sp?), in a chilled class with a 1/4 wedge of lemon. If you get a pitcher cut up a lemon into eiths, squeeze each on and put the pulp in the beer. The citirc acid has an effect on this beer that improves it immensely.

I go to university in Montreal, so this is a no brainer for me! You have to go to Brutopia on Crescent St. just south of St. Catherines St. if you want the best beer in the city brewed on spot with great live entertainment, especially thursday nights. In terms of poutine, I love Alto's restaurant on Parc St. just north of Sherbrooke st. (about a 15 min. walk from Brutopia). I hope this helps you.

Best and oldest sing-along bar: Les Deux Pierrots in Old Montreal. 114 St Paul East. French and English, old and new songs. Raucous and fun atmosphere. Directly behind on De la commune st, Frites Alors for great fries served many, many different ways.
