Hold down the "Alt" on your keyboard and type the numbers 0176 while you're holding down that key, when you release the Alt key the degrees symbol will appear like I've done here:
128°
I know it sounds bizarre but it works for that and loads of other symbols. There's a page telling you all the symbols plus their Alt numbers here:

Massively excellent! I never knew this. I was going to figure out which letter on the keyboard to use from Microsoft Word, using the Symbol font and see what key to use. Totally faster and totally code cool!

Press and hold Alt
Type 0176 on your Numpad or Numeric keyboard. Please note that only the Numpad should be used to type the numbers and not the regular keyboard.

If you are using Windows 8 on a laptop with no number pad go to the start page and move your cursor to the upper or lower right part of the screen and wait for the hidden menu to pull up. Click on the search (magnifying glass) button. Type in 'Character Map' and click on it when it pops up. Click on the "°" button, hit select, and hit 'copy', From there you can paste it anywhere you want.

Thanks, I tried ALT and 0176 and it worked beautifully. However I wish there would be an easier way to do this. I don't think I could remember the combination if I would ever need it again.

Go into a Word document, look up on the toolbar for Insert, click on this and in the drop down box there is the word Symbol, click on that and it will open up a box with symbols. Find the degree symbol, click on it and click insert tab in the box. It will then appear in your document.
