I absolutely love Casablanca. It is so very subtle, and the interaction between the characters are what makes it classic. There was no melodramatic outbursts, merely a tenseness that happens in a triangle situation like like Laszlo , Ilsa and Rick. Also the fact that enemies co-existing in a tense peace on neutral soil is a very interesting concept. My fav is the interactions between Lorre and Bogey, that's classic! "You know, Rick, I have many a friend in Casablanca, but somehow, just because you despise me, you are the only one I trust."

It's very well produced, that's for sure, and has action. romance, etc.
The end line by the way is:
"This looks like the beginning of a beautiful friendship"
Which Rick says to Louie. They dubbed the line in after filming, as it looked funny to have the two guys walk away silently.

Agree! Humphrey B doesn't do "happy" very well though. In the flashback scenes in Paris, he looks like he's passing a kidney stone. That aside, it's in a class of its own. The singing of the French anthem... can that be beat?

It's one of my favorites,too !
My husband and I have "favorite" scenes-
Mine is with the German officers singing a propaganda song (I think)
and then Laszlo tells the band to play the Marseilles (sp). I love that part!
We also know some lines "I am shocked that gambling is going on in this establishment" (or something like that)

I'd go with African Queen, as a better Bogart movie, and Some Like It Hot, as a better black and white one.
ps he never said "play it again Sam"
he said, something like you played it for her, play it for me, PLAY IT!"
I think this is now one of the most misquoted movie lines of all time!

Agree!!!!!!!!!!!! When those evil tv bastards put in on colorized, I fiddle with the color until its b/w again.
Side note to Taff: I'm sure everyone knows this anyway, but Rick NEVER said "Play it again, Sam." What he did say was.
"If she can stand it, so can I. Play it."
