97 Mitsubishi Eclipse.
While driving driver will experience a sudden and violent jerk followed by slight loss of power. Will jerk badly enough to make tires squeal, very violent and dangerous. Almost like you are slamming on the brakes but you're not. Doesn't die. Might happen multiple times.
It got progressively worse over week period. Changed oil, air, and fuel filter. Signs of water in gas -- filter in bad shape.
Checked spark plugs and wires. 2 plugs were not tightened down completely.
Seemed to work a little better for a day. Noticed RPM's were running high. Example: 1500 in park
Car was running pretty well previous to "new" problem.
Has 103000 miles, automatic transmission
ANY ideas??? Too broke to take to dealer!
Thanks!

Wow, what a mess! Here's what comes to mind for me...

Lockup torque converter
Transmission
Limited slip transaxle

All expensive!

With all the simple things having problems, i.e. two sparkplugs not tightened down completely, water in gas, bad filter... I would say this car has been brutalized by a mechanic wannabe that should be out picking flowers instead of sticking his nose under a car! All the things I've listed are part of the Transaxle... take the car to a reputable transmission shop and have them give it a thorough going over. Prepare yourself for a big bill too.

Good luck!

Check the Trans fluid. If it smells burned, replace it. The other things you mention set a pattern for a car that has not been maintained very well. At 103k you need to baby this ride.

Um, as much as you're discribing, I'd be somewhat amazed if you weren't throwing a Service light. You should go get those codes pulled. It's better to fix what is known to be broken than to just throw money at it.
