I'm an engineer and I work in an office all day. I'd like to change my career to something that gets me out of the office environment.

Does anyone have any suggestions or inspirational stories?

Be a truck driver. It is one of the few occupations left in the USA that cannot be exported to other countries. Some guy abroad cannot operate a truck in the USA. If you're good, that's job security.

It's also one of the few sectors where it is growing rapidly. The work is hard, however, the pay is good. It may start slow, but it will snowball. With a current shortage on truck drivers, it is extremely easy to get in. All you need is a CDL (Commerical Driver's License). Some companies may require you to have your own equipment (own truck or van).

Then you're set!

why not become involved in engineering in another sector such as bioengineering and design artificial limbs and high tech wheelchairs. The guys I work with all seem to enjoy their jobs and prefer it to when they worked in offices. It also means you get to help people and make a difference. Failing that, voluntary work at weekends/evenings may fill the void without interfering with income.

Land Surveyor
Our articling surveyor just graduated with a engineering degree. He is 50/50 (inside/outside)

I'm a survey technologist and am outside 75% of the time. Working inside is very difficult for me. Hard to stay awake.
