For my fellow goldie owners who properly (or at least attempt to) care for their goldies, I have some questions for you.

How many do you have, how old are they, how big are they, and the most important; what size tank do you have them in?

Oh, one more question...how pissed off do you get to hear about stupid people who put goldies in bowls and/or can't keep them alive for more than a year?

I have 3 goldfish, they're about 3-4 years old and swim around in a 33-gallon tank. I had 4, but gave my comet away to a friend with a pond, the comet was around 8" long. I now have a redcap oranda and a couple of fancy fantails (don't know their exact breed). They are all pretty much the same size - about 6" long and very fat!
A goldfish won't last very long in a bowl unless the bowl holds at least 5 gallons of water per inch of fish, but I don't get too upset if someone can't keep them alive for more than a year - some people have luck with certain fish where others don't. I work in a pet store and there are a lot of people who lost fish due to no fault of their own - these things happen. It so happens that I can't keep a Betta, I do everything "right", but they don't live past a few months - I gave up trying for their sake! Yes, the rule of thumb is 1-gallon of water per inch of fish, but 'fancy' goldfish are quite bulky creatures, not slim like other fish and require approx. 5-gal per 1" (length) of fish. I have just had a 100-gal tank built for my little guys and am waiting for the water to cycle before moving them to their new home.

I have fancies. My veiltail is about 9" long, she's my baby. I also have a moor an oranda a ryukin and 2 fantails. 3 of them are about 4" the other two are only an inch or so. I am moving soon and will probably relocate two of them. Once they are all full size they will be two crowded in my 75. One of my fantails is a blue- he's perfect.

Comet's will get very big. They don't stun their growth to the environment. I have mine in a 75 gallon tank. They love it, I started them out in a 55.

The general rule in aquariums is one inch of fish(length) to one gallon of water. Sounds like you have 13-14 inches of fish so they should be fine in your 45g tank...
