NEW YORK (AP) -- Lance Bass, band member of 'N Sync, says he's gay and in a "very stable" relationship with a reality show star.
Bass, who formed 'N Sync with Justin Timberlake, JC Chasez, Joey Fatone and Chris Kirkpatrick, tells People magazine that he didn't earlier disclose his sexuality because he didn't want to affect the group's popularity.
"I knew that I was in this popular band and I had four other guys' careers in my hand, and I knew that if I ever acted on it or even said (that I was gay), it would overpower everything," he tells the magazine.
'N Sync is known for a string of hits including "Bye Bye Bye" and "It's Gonna Be Me." The band went on hiatus in 2002. Bass has also found headlines for undertaking astronaut training and failing to raise money for a trip into space.
Bass says he wondered if his coming out could prompt "the end of 'N Sync." He explains, "So I had that weight on me of like, 'Wow, if I ever let anyone know, it's bad.' So I just never did."
The singer says he's in a "very stable" relationship with 32-year-old actor Reichen Lehmkuhl, winner of season four of CBS' "Amazing Race."
Bass and Fatone, 29, are developing a sitcom pilot inspired by the screwball comedy "The Odd Couple," in which his character will be gay.
"The thing is, I'm not ashamed -- that's the one thing I want to say," Bass says. "I don't think it's wrong, I'm not devastated going through this. I'm more liberated and happy than I've been my whole life. I'm just happy."

Yes, I heard Lance was gay, officially, today when I was logging on. It wasn't new, I've heard people suspecting he was gay. No, it's proven by word of mouth. But, I feel so embarrased. When I was eight I had this crush on him. Give me a break. But it's awkward, I had the crush on the gay guy! He said he didn't come out because he was worried his gayness was going to affect NSync's popularity, which to some extent has a point to it, because women drove much of NSync's popularity. Now that NSync's gone, he feels safe to tell everybody. That's his choice.

Yeah everyone was shocked. For chrissake Helen Keller could've told you he was gay. And he's coming out with now because we live in a society filled with backwards fathers that wouldn't let their daughters listen to a gay mans music. Let alone take those same daughters to a concert that had a gay man on stage. And those two factors are very bad for record sales.

NO no longer something surprises me anymore. i did not have an theory and he replaced into so sparkling shaken and he had some dispositions happening I understood about hiding it till he wasn't with the gang anymore, that could had damage something else of the band. yet cant look ahead to the unusual Couple to go back out.

Yes, go to TMZ.com. They are covering the story right now. They said Lance is coming out because is in a relationship with someone and he tired of hiding. I'm with you, who cares and who didn't know!

Actually his name is Lance Bass...and I always knew it...he acted really gay all the time! Props to him though, his hunny is hot!

I'm guessing you mean lance, its not a complete surprise, but i wouldn't say he looks gay, how are they supposed to look?
