If you do, be just as cautious of where/who you get it from as if you would any other pet. Some from over bred gene pools tend to have health problems (like with some breeds of purebred dogs/cats). They are very intelligent and can easily learn to escape their cages if left to their own devices too often. You can train them especially if you get one very young. When I had Koo-laid my pet rat I got her from friends and she was very friendly and loved to run around the room and her favorite place was to hang out on my shoulder so she could see everything and everyone. If you get one, spend the money and have it thoroughly checked out by a vet, just to be safe for you and your pet. Oh and be prepared for nocturnal banging about in it's cage... ;-)

Rats are wonderful pets. Males smell quite a bit more strongly than the females do. Rats are very unlikely to bite, unlike hamsters and other rodents, they are very intelligent and can learn many tricks, they are affectionate , easy to feed, easy to clean up after and wonderful pets. I think a great name for a rat would be "the cat".

Yes!!! I currently have 3 rats, 2 girls named Smokey and Tonya, and 1 boy named Dumbo (he is a dumbo rat!)
They are very clean animals, and are actually very smart. If you compare a human brain to a rats, than they have about the same mind kinda.
When I got one I thought, "Oh gross." But now that I have one I take them out for hours on end and let them run around like kitties, and they ride on my shoulder and all kinds of stuff.
You should name your rattie somthing easy for her to remember, that way when you call her if she escapes she will come. Or you could name her something else, your choice.
One last note, females are more curious and explore more, while males are very very lazy. lol.

i woud name it man ****, then use a needle to inject ICH medication thats used on fish into its body and watch it stagger around coughing crap up and die.
its fun trust me
if you wanna put it out of its missery early then use a hammor and give it a few wacks... took about 5 for mine to die, i think its eye shot out of the socket of the 3rd hit. believe me they feel no more pain after the 4th hit.
