This is about an online relationship:

A man cheats on his gf by flirting with another girl with promises of going further later. Girl feels bad and tells gf what happened. Gf confronts man and he promises to remain faithful from now on. Girl and Man now want to remain friends and they both promise to be good....should gf be worried???

This is all done online in IM...none of us know each other in rl.

Yes, be worried.
Also, an online relationship isn't a "real" relationship and commitment until you have taken steps to be together (assuming you are an adult only). You can't truly know someone and what they are about until you have spent time with them one on one offline.

If someone wants to offer to be faithful in an online only relationship, that is fine, but it's rather difficult to require someone to do so, because you really have no idea what they are really like or what they are really doing.
