Because humans develop an internal clock called the circadian clock, and we are normally diurnal (daytime alert). However, if you switch hours and are consistently up during the night, your clock changes. Whatever clock you have, that helps determine when you get sleepy. Ever notice that you get a "second wind" sometime even after you have been up for a while and were tired? That usually happens during the "normal" alert time for you.

The real reason is I guess because we are oriented to act during the day, not like some predators during the night. That was for thousands of years and our body got used to it, so our body started to produce a hormone called melatonin. It is secreted by the pineal gland from dusk to shortly before dawn, but is not secreted during the day. This hormone is the main reason for our sleep during the night.
