Travels with Charley - This is a non-fiction account of his 16-month 10,000-mile journey across the country in his truck-turned-camper named Rocinante and his poodle Charley. He meets quite a few interesting characters as he travels around, and I really enjoyed the variety of stories he hears from the people he meets. He had an interesting sense of humor!

My favorite book by John Steinbeck is "The Moon is Down." I hadn't heard of it until I found it at a used book store a few years ago and grabbed it because it was about World War II and I'd read and liked some of Steinbeck's other books. Then it sat on my shelf for a couple more years before I finally read it recently, and it turned out to be *excellent.* I'll kick myself for years for not reading it sooner. It's short and it's not what jumps to mind when you think of Steinbeck books, but it's my favorite work of his, by far.

East of Eden is my favorite. In it Steinbeck wrestles with the problem of inherent goodness and evil in people and comes to an interesting conclusion. Steinbeck was great at choosing classical images for titles, this one of course being Biblical.
It made a great movie too, starring James Dean.

"East of Eden" and "Cannery Row."

The first movie of "East of Eden" was produced in 1955 as a vehicle for James Dean and therefore only the final third of the entire novel was adapted for the motion picture, since many situations could not be openly presented on screen at that time. Years later, in 1981, it was made into a mini-series starring Jane Seymour and Timothy Bottoms, which held true to the entire original novel.

For me, this continues to be the only case where a Hollywood remake was far better than the original; mainly because its adaptation remained true to the book

East of Eden and Of Mice and Men.

I never could get into The Pearl (forced to read that in high school), the Red Pony or The Moon is Down.

East of Eden has always been my favorite. I like the Chinese philosopher among other things.

If you ever come to California come to Salinas and see the John Steinbeck museum. It's wonderful.

The Grapes of Wrath. The ending is really strange though, it is actually kind of disturbing.

I would follow that with Of Mice and Men, which also has a sad and disturbing ending.
