I hate the government because of the vast degree of corruption. This country didn't support this war, and our administration went after it anyway because it got them a lot of money. But as for us, our education and health care systems have gone to sh*t, no one can get a job, and while the people in power are getting disgustingly wealthy, it's very much at our expense. The people in power make deals behind our backs, and are able to easily keep it secret because anyone who is allowed top clearance in intelligence is forced to sign a vow of secrecy. We're pretty much being used and manipulated, and I'm sick of it. They don't give us our freedom that they speak of so much, only care about their wealth, and it's just wrong.

I think we Americans love our country, and most of us are thankful to be here, and proud to be American. This country was set up on wonderful principles by men and women who fought for what they believed in. I guess enough time has passed that the original values on which our country was founded have become corrupted. It is not that we are unpatriotic- we just don't believe everything our politicians tell us, and many of us are very disgusted with our government that seems more motivated by greed than by humanitarian concerns- there isn't even a balance anymore. The ones of us who don't admit there is any problem just can't see the forest for the trees. I agree with Mary Lynn, above, except I'm not sure our votes mean all that much anymore.

I like my government, although I don't always agree with their policies. I love my country, and believe it is the greatest nation in the world. I do not believe that the government attempts to keep anyone from achieving whatever they are capable of financially, so long as it is legal. I do however believe that there are some individuals in government who would love to see everyone dependent on government as so to increase their own power.

Additional Info: Whenever I post to questions like this it nevers ceases to amaze me the dim view some Americans have of other Americans. I find it unsettling when I see the term America love it or leave, because even though I lean to the conservative side, I find this statement completely intolerant. On the other hand you have the liberals who always consider themselves more compassionate than everyone else, their favorite statements revolve around the concept that if you don't agree with them you are either stupid or brainwashed. I do not understand why we cannot in theory agree to disagree, and leave it at that, but then maybe that would be to rational for many Americans these days. Lastly we have the people like Katy who just leave me wondering what country they are living in. If she thinks nobody can get a job in an economy with 5% unemployment, then frankly she is unemployable under any circumstances.

The biggest problem with Americans in general is that we are indeed spoiled. To me that is a sign of just how prosperous and rich in freedom this country really is. I just wish that we could all be more civil with each other in general. You see that is the real secret our elders knew that we have forgotten. It is why in retrospect the past seems so much better than the present. Life has never been easy, but complicating it with so much animosity for those of our own national origin just makes it that much harder. Take from this what you will, or leave it in it's entirity if choose. It's up to each individual, but I submit to you that you will always draw more flies with honey than with vinegar.

P.S. To our Russian host on this question I have this to say. For every one American you find who bad mouthed the country. I can show you 100 that will disagree with them. I have been to Russia, I love the culture and history there, I found the people very fascinating also. I do not pass judements against the country or her people whether I like their government or not. However, I will remind you that it wasn't that many years ago that the whole world despised your country for it's agression and denial of rights to citizens and satellite states alike. So I ask you, since you have such a dim view of America in general, have you ever visited our country? If not perhaps you should before you try to judge us.

Most of us are blinded by the news media. I was watching CNN last night and almost threw up when they did a story about how Lebonese were still partying in some of the local bars in Beirut. That's the kind of coverage most Americans see. They don't see the bodies or the wounded, they get stories about the "lighter side" of armed conflicts. Anytime some starts showing the horror of war, the neocons cry "liberal bias" in the media. People are waking up to it, I just hope it's not too late when for us when that last 30% finally opens their eyes.

Our govenment and economic system are the best in the world. Having said that they are not without it's problems. I'm 80% happy with our president. I am much happier than I would have been had the other option won.

We have the freedom to choose what we want to do with our lives. Resources are available to help us succeed. Not everybody is going to become a Bill Gates and it may take multple generations of a family to work and achieve to gain utlimate success. But, each generation has the opportunity to better itself over the previous generation. There are people that are insanely wealthy and there are people that are insanely poor. There is enough opportunity here for everybody to lift themselves up. I don't believe in taking from the rich and giving to the poor. I believe in helping the poor to fend for themselves and pursue goals. In any society, you are going to have a certain percentage of people that just do not want to progress for one reason or another.

Yeah...America is the best.

Your question assumes that both the government and the
citizenry act as a cohesive group - and none of us do.

The government is made up of lots of people with differing
view points. True, the current administration has one political
bent - but there are lots of people who have been there for
decades of different views.

Personally, I am apalled by our Congress and Executive
branches. Many of them are clearly crooked and none of them
seems to have any idea how the country is generally
perceived overseas.

However, that's why we have elections.

In any case, I don't think the government generally cares
about my financial stability - only that I don't starve and
that I don't have medical crises.

The government was meant to preserve our god given rights and form a navy for our defense. After 200 years, the government has slowly lost this ideal and has become more powerful and influential in Americans lives. I personally love America, but think the government should back off.

I like our Constitution. It is flawed, but it works when we let it. Personally, I respect the "Office" of the President but think our current president is dumber than a pet rock, pretentious, pig headed and damaging the aforementioned Constitution that I respect. I love my country and always have, sometimes I just don't like what we do.

Of course, we get the government we deserve, so all of you who answer this question with a no, need to get of their rear end and vote in November to "throw the rascals out!"

The USA is a wonderful place where we have many freedoms and liberties. Everyone expects the USA to be utopia. The fact of the matter is that we aren't perfect, as is no one. But we do try and we accept and acknowledge that mistakes are going to be made. We try to circumvent them, but if they do happen we do try to learn from mistakes. As for me I am patriotic and believe in this country and our government (even if we aren't perfect).

If people are made to rely on the government for everything, the government can basically enslave the people--"obey us or you won't get what you need, you'll starve," for example.

Bush needs to be impeached and jailed...and I'd say the same for Kerry had he gotten in the White House.
