It doesn't matter what guitar you get, I know you'd think there could potentially be a huge gap in quality, but that's not entirely true. Just make sure that the strings are raised high enough, but not too high, and that you like the sound coming out of the sound hole. Also make sure to get something with slightly larger frets, and good spacing between strings, the bigger the spacing the easier it'll be for you to play earlier on.

I have three acoustic guitars of different quality. You may be interested in an Ibanez acoustic, they are probably the best quality of the cheaper guitars. One step up from that is Wasburn which can become quite pricey. Lastly, the guitar of all guitars is the Taylor Acoustic Guitar which is what all other brands aspire to. But they are not within your price range. Also, you might want to look on ebay. Usually i am hesitant to recommend ebay for musical instruments, but given that i've made out so well in the past, I am going to suggest it, but do not, and i repeat NOT, purchase from anyone with lower than a 99% feedback rating. 99% is even kinda low, try for 100%, and read the comments, make sure that your seller is trust worthy. All in all, I recommend an Ibanez acoustic, i think it will fit your needs nicely.

i hate to say it, but if you want a good quality acoustic, you re gonna have to spend around 700-900 dollars, as for brands, ovation is a good starter guitar, as is fender or ibanez, you can find a nice ovation or ibanez for pretty cheap, fender on the other hand is probably gonna be a little more pricey(youre basically paying for the name on the guitar) in the end it all boils down to how it plays, what is sounds like, the quality of the instrument, take somebody along that has some knowledge of guitars to avoid getting burnt.
