There are 2 two things you need to do.

1.First on the remote machine
- Right-click 'My Computer'
- Select the 'Remote' tab there
- Under the 'remote' tab select the option 'Allow users to connect remotely to this computer'
-Get the IP address of the computer (It should be a Public IP or the computer should belong to your local network)

2.On the local computer
- Click Start -> All programs-> Accessories-> Communications -> Remote Desktop Connection
- In the window that pops up type in the IP address of the remote computer

All the Best :)

First of all check if the machine you want to control is running WIndows XP PROFESSIONAL edition. It must be the professional edition in order for it to act as the server in the connection. The computer you are looking from can be any other windows version.

Next, use this guide to connect the comptuers: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/mobility/getstarted/remoteintro.mspx . If you can't figure that one out, then use this one: http://www.windowsnetworking.com/j_helmig/wxprmdtp.htm
If you have Windows XP Pro on the computer youre trying to control, then use it instead of the VNC option (see next paragraph). Since it's tailored especially for controlling a machine running windows xp pro, more work has been put into it especially for that OS, so of course it will be superior to just about any other similar program.

If you don't have windows XP professional edition on the computer you want to control, then your next option is VNC. There are several versions of VNC out there, such as RealVNC, TightVNC, UltraVNC, TridiaVNC, RADMIN, and several others.
VNC basically does what remote desktop does except I don't think that VNC fetches the sounds from the remote (server) computer. So which VNC is for you? go here for discussions about it: http://ask.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=04/10/20/0132236&tid=185&tid=201&tid=4

best of luck!

The easiest way is to download RADMIN (from http://www.famatech.com/download/) , it free for trial, then install it on both machines and run it, thier is few settings on it if you find it hard to setup it, then download Remoteanything from http://www.twd-industries.com/en/index.htm, install the slave on the pc you want to control and Master on the PC where you want to control.
