To be great at long distance running frankly takes having a natural talent for it. You will find out soon enough if it is for you.

Invest in a vest! Ther are weighted vests that help people of all sports achieve superstatus. They're pricey but worth it.
More importantly you should train yourself with a new challenge everyweek. Here's an example:
-Week 1 Pick a point you can sprint and time yourself. Keep doing that for week one with steady distance running (at least 2 miles). Time this second part also. At the end of your run routine dig deep inside of yourself and sprint for the victory line. NEVER STOP AFTER YOUR RUN, KEEP WALKING FAST UNTIL YOUR HEART RATE GOES DOWN.
-week 2 Try to beat your best sprint time from last week and try to beat your steady run time. If you beat it extend your sprint distance by ten yards. Record your time and follow up with an even longer steady run. Remember to sprint for the win.
-Thoughout your steady run you can experience with different levels and times where you speed up your pace. You want to beat you overall average time.

If you're gonna run distance, you gotta run distance. If you wanna run fast, you gotta practice running fast. But do too much of either and you'll end up injured. The key is to gradually add on the distance. Be patient and you'll be logging the miles, wearing out the shoes and finishing ahead of the rest.

you can't just become a distance runner overnight. you have to have natural talent, adn be able to endure it. work your way up from 1/2 mile to 3/4 mile to 1 mile.....etc. don't push yourself to hard on the first day. Good Luck!

Try Runner's World magazine--a good source especially for beginning runners. It will have advice for diet, training regiments, etc.
