If your fear of water starts at the neck then I can help you. In other words if you are comfortable standing in water up to your chest then I can help you swim and it will take about two minutes. Within half an hour you will be swimming a breadth of the pool. I have achieved this on several occassions . . . . (however - If you have a morbid fear of water then I probably can't help you and maybe you have rabbies!! ho ho ho)

OK - first and only lesson -

In any pool stand in a position where the water is up to your chest and you know that, if you want to, you can simply stand up any time you wish.

Now lower yourself slowly down and as your face becomes level with the water hold your nose.

Now KEEP PUSHING your head under the water and remember you can still stand up any time you want!! Don't give up after a couple of inches - keep pushing down!!

As you push your head down an amazing thing will happen.

With no effort from yourself your feet will leave the floor of the pool.

Congratulations - you are now swimming.

As the euphoria surges through you, you will want to bob up and shout out loud I CAN SWIM! Try to resist this urge as other pupils have often regreted it later and a lot of other swimmers will look at you and make that Doh noise that is meant to convey "Yeh - so what!?"

This is the only fear you have to overcome - the fear of your head being immersed in water. Once you have overcome this and gained more confidence you will want to demonstrate your new skill and you will LOVE it!!

It is important to be able to let go of your nose as soon as possible otherwise you tend to swim in circles.

GODD LUCK - although you wont need it. I would love to hear how you get on.

Never had a fear of water. Just was never able to get it down. I was doing something wrong. I finally joined the YMCA and took the adult swimming lessons class so I could learn how to do it right. Now I have the ability to swim recreationally.

Well my mom took me to the Y for swimming lessons when I was three and it makes it much easier on the child because children get over their fear of things easier than adults do. But to get over a fear of water, I'd learn to swim in shallow water lol.
