It all depends on you (and your roommate). If you've never shared a room before, can afford a single room, and are outgoing enough so that you wont be holed up in your room all year, then you might want to get a single room. If you really want to get to know someone, enjoy the challenge of living with another person and are really shy, you should room with someone. Remember, if things get really bad you can eventually change you room assignment.

I've had both experiences, living with someone else and on my own. I much prefer the latter but everyone is different. I am more of a private person anyway and my last roommate was a nightmare. I don't know the prices of Cornell University dorms, I bet you can find out on their website though. Is there website www.cornell.edu and look up housing.

Generally schools reserve single rooms for upperclassmen, if you're a Freshman you're almost certainly going to be stuck with at least one other person. Wether that's a good thing or a bad thing depends on exactly who the other person is and how much you value your privacy (I've had wonderful roommates and horrible roommates for example). At least initially you're likely to be lumped in with someone more or less at random so its a bit of a crapshoot. Some schools may also charge more to live with fewer people (ie a room with four is cheaper than a double or single.) In short a matter of preference and what you can get away with.

I think you should live with someone else, especially if it is your first year at a University. I did the random roommate selection my first year and my roommate and I ended up being best friends. I know that it doesn't always work out this way, but having a roommate is a good way to get to know someone in an unfamiliar place and possibly become great friends.

With my experience, it depends on the size of the dorm. If it's a larger dorm, two people to a room is great. This gives you someone to hang out with, watch TV with, and get to know. If it's a smaller room, one person is plenty.

There are always upsides to having your own space but i would say its better to share. For the pure and simple reason its extremely sociable and will help you make new friends straight away.
