I have a Honda Valkyrie with 148.000 miles that will out-last , out-run and out handle any Harley.
May wife's 750 Magna will will run right with it and beat Harleys off the line even quicker.
I also have a 600 Shadow VLX. It has a whole lot more miles than any Harley without having the top end rebuilt even once. I have a picture of it smoking a Harley at a rally.
Now, what do you think?

There is probably no more controversial question you could have asked, aside from "Israel or Lebanon?".
As a biker for 30+ yrs, here's how I see it. Do you care more about your image, and about looking like a badass outlaw, or do you care about comfort, speed, handling, reliability, engineering, and value?
If it's the former, go H-D. You'll be happy.
If it's the latter, the Honda (or Yamaha, Suzuki, Kaw) is the only way to go. Honda builds more gas engines than any other company on the planet. They are the most reliable & very effificient.
All Harleys except the V-Rod (designed by Porsche) have 50 yr old engine design & technology. There is no comparison. A good 450cc Japanese dirt bike makes more power than a 1200cc Harley.
Good Luck.

I don't know how much money you have or make, but, a Harley is a very expensive proposition. Besides the higher selling price, the insurance will be higher as well. Every Harley owner I know, and me, keep $2000 in a separate bank account to keep the bike going. Tires are expensive and Harley's go through them quick because of their weight. Anything you do to your Harley is big bucks whether it's routine maintenance or accessories or repairs.
But if you can afford one, and won't mind the occasional head ache, then get a Harley. There's nothing else like it.

Harley's are nice but I've always loved the UJM's (Universal Japanese Motorcycles) for theire dependability. I had a 1977 Honda CB400 Four SS for many years and loved it. A reliable comfortable ride to and from work and town but quick and sporty when you wanted it to be. The Honda inline fours run a lot smoother than Harley V-Twins too. It really depends on what you want thoughl. If your going for the "biker look" go for a Harley. If you just want fun reliable transportation without the "biker look" go for a Honda. And actually, the older Hondas, especially the CB models, are becoming quite rare, and therefore collectable and valuable. But if you go for a new one, they will decline in value.

Honda is actually the standard of high quality and technology, they are usually faster than harleys, but some models lack some spirit. Harleys always look beautyfull, and sound great, but are less dependable and rustic engined.
Even so i would buy any of the two, because both are benchmarks on the motorcycle hystory.

Harley has the best resale value.
Honda if you don't care about selling it for a profit.
Both are great motorcycles. Both get the same milage, both run well, both will get you from point A to point B.
My Harley has increased in value since I bought it, a Honda will never do that.

Image or riding? What do you want the bike for?
Image: Harley. You'll be the newest Potatopotatopotato on the block.
Riding: Honda. the Honda (unlike the HD) is designed with technology that was completely unknown to your grandpa.
Youn choose. But choose wisely. Otherwise you'll, um, have to sell it.
