I wouldn't want them to practice on me! If I went in for a tattoo, and my tattoo artist said to me, "Oh, you're my first one," I'd run away!

If they practice on the deceased, the undertaker may just cover up the tattoo with a clothing item, and no one would be brave enough to inspect during the funeral ceremony. Is that how they do it?

ok this is a gross but true answer..... i know a heap of well known tattooists well and they practice on PIGS skin..... apparently it has the closest thing to a human texture that you can get, it even takes the ink like a human apparently.... so yuk yuk yuk but there ya go, the answer is pig skin

EDIT:

Seeing as how I live in Vegas, I have quite a few friends that have become tattoo artists since I've known them... I know for a fact they practice on (for depth perception) and pig skin if its available.. but moreso they also practice on their friends and themselves. A bunch of my tatoo artist friends have random, weird, and not so good looking tattoos on themselves that they did themselves.. Which takes talent... not only are you tattooing yourself.. but its upside down! I mean.. tattoo artist just outline what they've already transfered on your skin, so its like they have a stencil.. but still.. (=

Haha, no!! Tattoo artists are just that, artists!! They draw on paper for "practice". Sometimes they will tattoo themselves to get a feel for whats its going to be like.

Tattoo artists usually begin on grapefruits or large oranges. . . after some time of this they usually tattoo friends for free and that's really what they do. . . from fruit to people in three easy steps!!!

First they practice on various skin like materials (leather etc.) then on themselves and courageous friends/colleagues.

But Belgian artist Wim Delvoye tatoos pigs:

Themselves usually. That's why they have such bad tattoos a lot of times.

I would buy the "pig skin" answer. However I have never thought of that kind of thing. I don't like tattoos, just because as you would get older it starts looking worse and worse. and plus why ruin something perfect that God gave you.
