The real reason is that comic book artists (especially before the 60s) felt that a costume should be very form fitting - except they were scared about illustrating their groin area too much, making it too pronounced, or not pronounced enough. When you draw people in regular clothes, you don't have to worry about the size of a bulge seeming awkward, or inappropriately shaped. Basically, they just didn't want to have to worry about drawing child-safe "schlongs". Even Silver Surfer, who doesn't even wear clothes, had to wear "underpants" for a while
So to keep it from being an issue, they had them wear the outer layer. These days, we're a bit less sensitive to that sort of thing, and we've accepted that some level of bulge in super-pants is ok.
This is obviously a huge double standard in gender. But I'm not complaining.
Oh, and Superman can barely be hurt in anyway. Yes, if Batman had it in for Superman, and could find a way to surprise a man who hears a roach crawl from a city away, can see through most things, and can move faster than the speed of sound, he could ambush Superman with Kryptonite. But if anything goes wrong whatsoever, Superman wins. If they have equal time to prepare, Superman wins. If Batman and Spiderman team up on Superman, Superman still wins.

In the fight I say if Batman or Spiderman has kryptonite then he defeats Superman but then Spiderman just totally dominates Batman. Without the kryptonite he goes against Batman after all his gadgets are used up and then goes against Spiderman a hard fought battle but then Superman finally wins. Spiderman fought Superman back in the comic Spiderman vs Superman and I think Spiderman just accepted he could not match the man of steels fists and strength.
As far as the underwear with tights I say is because otherwise the costume would look really weird. Batman and Superman are just two examples of Super Heros with capes that have underwear over their tights. Spiderman does not need because otherwise his costume would look pretty stupid. Same with Gambit his classic costume would look dumb with underwear. Or Flash his costume does not need underwear either.

All due respect to Yooka, the I believe real reason for undies on the outside goes back to the circus. When Joe Shuster and Jerry Seigel created Superman, they designed a costume based on something worn by acrobats and trapeze artists in the circus. Go to any today and you'll see they still wear outfits like that. Since Superman was such a huge success, Kane used a similar design when he created Batman. From that point on, all super-heroes were modeled in the same way. Although I think Billy has a great point up there: You gonna tell him he can't?
Oh, as far as the fight goes, it's interesting to note that Superman has never been able to put Batman down for the count. In just a pick-up brawl, Superman would probably win, but has Batman ever NOT been prepared for every eventuallity? Everytime he leaves Gotham, he has that Kryptonite ring with him (mentioned in Superman/Batman #3, I believe).

You have to keep in mind that the original Superman comic book hero was created way back in the 40's - I think. Back then, they had different ideas of what would be considered "acceptable" as far as censorship. As far as the battle, I think that Batman would probably go down first, because super gadgets just can't hold a candle to REAL superpowers. Spiderman might last a little longer, but only because he might be harder to catch. In the end, I think Superman would mop the floor with both of them. They actually did have a feature episode of Batman where Clark Kent comes to Gotham City, and Bruce Wayne nearly steals Lois Lane. Batman and Superman end up at odds over the Joker, but Superman ends up having to concede to Batman because Batman's not affected by the Joker's kryptonite. (What an anti-climax).

Dude his underwear is not actually on top, it just looks like it. Reason being he's wearing cowboy-style chaps, not proper trousers. A hero never would want to wear his underwear over his trousers as he wants to be an role model to his people but not an object of ridicule.
And personally i feel that batman would win between all the three because of his intelligence. You must have read in some comics superman quoting that "i am tired of you beating the crap out of me with your toys". Also batman as always has back up plans for everything. He keeps the enemy in mind and prepares a back up plan to take him out. remember that superman gave him an kryptonite crystal to work out on how to neutralise it and batman could turn in into something which nulls the power. anyways it depends on ur choice of hero between superman and batman as spiderman, i dont think he will stand before both superman and batman.

you're all incorrect. Years interior the previous, Superman made a raffle that his roundhouse kick replaced into greater advantageous effective then Chuck Norris's roundhouse kick. The situations of the guess reported that whoever had the weaker kick had to located on their underpants on the outdoors of his pants.

Zero fashion sense? Also to highlight their man-parts, I expect.
Batman would probably win. You know he carries around kryptonite just in case he has to kick Supes' behind. He'd probably have dug up Spiderman's weaknesses as well. He's Batman.

It's for shock effect. His enemies would be so shocked they'll be that much slower than him letting him get in the first punch. Even after so many years Lex Luthor is unable to get the best of supes because he has this fetish for red underpants. He is a great fruit of the loom fan.
