Carrier oils are vegetable oils, also know as base oils. These oils do have a shelf life that varies. The oils oxidize and go rancid. You can extend the shelf life on oils by adding other oils that will slow down the oxidation or even eliminate it completely. For example adding Vitamin E will help extend shelf life... but adding Jojoba oil will cause it to never go rancid. These should be added during the preparation.

Keep your oil blends away from heat and light, which can cause them to oxidize and turn rancid very quickly.

Shelf life is about 6 months to a year for the scented oil that has nothing added to help prevent oxidization.

It really depends on the oil. A saturated one will not go bad because all of its hydrogen bonds are filled up, an unsaturated one will, becuase there are open bonds for compounds like sulfur to sneak in.

So look at it and see what kind of oil its scented with, and then find out if that oil is saturated or unsatureated (or monounsaturated.)
