Iran seeks to create a strong and unified Shi'ite bloc in the middle east. Of course in the middle east such a bloc would be pan-national which means it can disrupt or cripple politics in sovereign countries from Lebanon to Saudi Arabia.

By flexing this muscle Iran hopes to (a) empower Shi'ites which have been something have a step child in the Moslem world and (b) become a regional superpower that can call the shots for many other countries; it is already doing so in Lebanon. Becoming a regional superpower would give it a base for challenging western countries.

Being an Islamic nation it tends to put these goals in religious terms. And having done so it feels there are no limits to what it can do to accomplish them, from funding terrorists to developing WMD.

That cheeky old Iran, trying to have nuclear weapons eh? We're the only ones allowed to have them!

Ah, but we're not militarist agressors you say, we'd never invade another country you say? Except of course Iraq, Afganistan, Iraq again, Honduras, Grenada, Vietnam, Korea etc etc.

Ah, but we'd never USE them though, surely THAT'S the real point isn't it. Except those couple of times that we DID use them. Apart from that though...

You see why the world thinks the US is a bunch of hypocrites?
