If you are using outlook you can set up your e-mail account to notify you when an e-mail has been received and/or read.

You can use a read reciept. That's the only client-side method I know of. If you had access to the sending mail server or it's logs (which you don't or you wouldn't be asking this question) you could see if the message was received by the remote mail server. Once there it's a fairly good bet it made it to the sender, unless they're using a spam filter or something.

Short answer: Unless you request a receipt, or you know what you're doing and have access to either the sending or receiving server you really don't know.

Most e-mail clients offer services such as "read notification", "delivery receipt", and "delete notification" to inform the sender of whether or not the user got their message, read it, and deleted it.

Dig around in your options and see if you can find something that will let you do that. I can't be more specific without knowing what e-mail client you use.
