Descended from horses introduced by the Spanish Conquistadors, Paints became part of the herds of wild horses that roamed the Western deserts and plains. Once domesticated, because of their working ability and heart, the Paint was cherished by cowboys for cattle work. Native Americans revered the Paint, which they believed to possess magical powers.

A paint horse has to come from two parents who are either registered paints,QH or TB's.Anything else with color is considered a pinto.Paint is an actual breed and not just color.
You can go to www.apha.com for more info on paint horses.

its breeding- you have to have one Paint in the line somewhere to have one produced. the mare and the stallion can both be paints but unless the stallion is homozygous, then there is not a 100% chance of getting one. if he is then you will get one for sure. the stallion has to be tested to prove that he is. the foal can come out a solid color and as long as one of his parents is a registered Paint horse, then he can be registered as a Paint. One of my friends horses is jet black and he is double registered as a Paint and a Quarter Horse. he has no other color on him at all. Paint is not a color but it is a color breed, like the Pinto and the Palamino.

A paint is a breed, not a color. There are such things as registered paints that are all one color (I personally know one named "Cass").

Attached is a link to some info on the breed.
