Some states require that all parties to a conversation know that they are being taped. Some states only require that one party to the conversation knows it is being taped.

Some states will allow a "illegal" tape to be used in a civil or criminal trial, some states don't. Some states allow the "illegal" tape to be used in a criminal trial, but not in a civil trial between the parties to the conversation. California allows an "illegal" tape to be used in any case, except for a family law case between the parties.

Best advice: If you intend to tape someone, talk to an attorney first.

Yes this is true as long as the one of two people is the person being taped. Otherwise you can only use any messages they might leave on a answering machine.

Unless you're a government agency with special powers and court orders backing you up, it's better to let the person know you are taping it. Sometimes if you don't, it's illegal. And depending on your reason, it could be unethical.

Depends on the law of the state you are in. In some cases you can't record without either telling all persons, or having a beep signal.
