The word "skyscraper" is a general term for tall buildings. There is no height or floor requirement a building must reach for it to be considered a skyscraper.
In fact, one of the first skyscrapers ever built was the 10-story Home Insurance Building (1884-85) in Chicago. It was desined by William Le Baron Jenney and featured a metal frame that supported much of its load. Since then skyscrapers have benefited from more efficient techniques in building steel frames and high-speed elevators, meaning taller buildings than ever before.

A skyscraper is a very tall, continuously habitable building. Although there is no official definition, a height of approximately at least 150 metres or 500 feet is often used as a criterion for a building to qualify as a skyscraper. Other criteria like shape and appearance also affect whether or not a building is considered a skyscraper.

It is a relative term. In the 1920s eight would have been enough in most cities. By the fifties it would have been about twenty . by the 1980s it was about forty. it continues to increase and is now about seventy or more in some Asian cities.
