I have to stay in safe mode for the time being, as the regular mode freezes up. My sound is disabled in Safe Mode, but is there a way to turn it back on?

When you are in Safe Mode, your sound will continue to be disabled, but if you are in safe mode in hopes of fixing your sound so as to get it to run in normal mode, I suggest you do the following:
1)find out what type of sound card is in your computer
2)search for driver downloads for that particular card.
If you can find the proper driver, download and install it, if not, try doing the Windows Updates, which often times will point you to the right driver for most of your Mass-Selling sound cards.

Also: often times if you are in safe mode no modem drivers will load. Some times, dependant on the type of modem you have, you can switch over to Safe Mode With Networking and this will allow you to access the internet. This will be your best bet in downloading new drivers.

No, probably not. the point of Safe Mode is to turn off many drivers and settings to allow you to troubleshoot a problem. You should not have to work in Safe Mode. If a regular bootup is riddles with freezes, you are probably infected with something or have a mis-installed driver or the like.

To start, you should download Ad-Aware Personal http://www.lavasoft.com and run a full scan.
If you do not have virus software, run McAfee FreeScan http://us.mcafee.com/root/mfs/
If you have virus protection software, make sure to download any updates and perform a full scan

In the end, you may need to take it to someplace to get service.

When you are in safe mode, there are just the drivers that you need for windows to function, you need the kill everything that you downloaded - all programs so you know where the problem is - it's not windows - you are freezing because theres something running in the back using all of you resources and memory

Nope. When your computer is in SAFE MODE, there are no drivers loaded. This includes sound driver, video driver, network driver, or any other form of driver.

Without drviers, you can't hear sound, use a modem, or get anything above basic low resolution video. The very purpose of that is to allow you to remove damaged/incorrect drivers that you may have loaded on your system.

No, as long as you're in SAFE MODE no drivers are installed. The computer is in a basic "safe" mode that requires no drivers.

*IF* you're having problems when NOT in Safe Maode, try using a RESTORE Date a few days BEFORE you noticed problems.

Right click on My Computer.
Click Device Manager on the Hardware tab.
