I live and teach first grade in a private school in Mexico. I also have two young children who I would not send to public school here. I only about public schools here from word of mouth, but noone I know sends their kids to public school. Basically, if you are middle class or above, your kids go to private school. The school I teach at is bilingual, but there are many, many private schools here. The Catholic church has a few, bilingual (English and Spanish) is big, and there are many others, small and big.

Public schools have the reputation of having teachers that don't show up at least one day per week, and their curriculum is at least a year behind private schools. Their (public) school day is also much shorter, and I doubt they have much in the way of material.

Here in BC (Canada), each province has its own control of schools, so I can't speak for the whole country.

All curriculum is created and mandated by the government, so what is taught in public or private school is pretty much the same. Private schools may add extra courses that are not government approved, but these courses are for personal development rather than go towards graduation and GPA's. Usually private schools have more speciallized teachers, better funding and supplies, and smaller class sizes. The students typically do better than in public schools, however if you look at statistics that take into account the socioeconomic group only that can afford private school, and compare it to that same group in public school, there is less difference. Some private schools offer homework help and tutoring services, but that is also true of public schools. Private schools have uniforms, and public schools don't.

Not too sure if that answers your question.
