why do some people use "Expiry date" instead of "expiration date"?

why do some people use "Expiry date" instead of "expiration date"?

is this a european thing to use "expiry" usually when referring to credit card expiration date? and if "expiry" is short for "expiration", what's up with the "Y"?

I don't know...but I've been taught to use "expiry"..I was born and brought up in India..
