The first baby is usually a party for adults and family to get together. The baby won't remember or care about what he gets. I threw a big expensive first bday for my 1st child and once you experience that kind you want to go with simple later on. Parties and entertaining can be very tiresome.

We had a huge family thing for our first son's birthday party, actually two since both sets of grandparents wanted to throw parties. It was horrible. He was overwhelmed by all the people and didn't enjoy himself at all, except when he got to mash his personal little birthday cake all over the place. Anyway, with our next three children we've just done the really quiet (immediate)family thing here at home. They loved their cakes and enjoyed the paper and boxes more than the gifts as my oldest son had but didn't have the pressure of a mass of people to "perform" for.

I had the same problem...
I had the party at Chuck E Cheese. NEVER AGAIN. She was 1... not old enough to enjoy it. They had 6 other parties going on at the same time. It was hot in there (but snowing out side-- december). NOT a good choice.
See if your local fire house or rescue squad has a room to rent for the day.... just for a few hours since your little one will have had his fill of ppl pinching his cheeks and being passed around.
Good luck and HAPPY BIRTHDAY little man!

I have the same problem...not enough room. My daughter turns one tomorrow, but my in-laws are hosting a party for her on Saturday. We will be grilling out and having cupcakes in the shape of a #1 since I couldn't find a Baby Einstein themed cake.
If having a party at a relatives house isn't an option, what about renting a room at your church or local bowling alley? I rented a room in the basement of our church for my daughter's baptism and the church only charged me $25 for the entire afternoon, as well as use of the kitchen for catered food.

we had 3 parties! I lived in a very small apartment and we used the same decorations, alot a grocery stores will give you a free bday cake if you take a birth certificate in showing it's their first bday. We got 7 of them because they are kind of small. The first day we had the my family, second we had my husbands family and the third we had our friends. It was so easy and cheap, and we didn't do any food. Just chips and dip. And I got alot of complements on it, plus the families arent hogging all the "grandchild time" it was split up perfectly!

We had a small, intimate party,at home, with just close family and friends. At that age, they do not remember nor do they know what's going on.BUT it is important to you and pics always preserve the memories. At that time,my daughter(now 2 yrs old)was into Elmo so that was the theme.Just whatever you do,take pics and enjoy the time, because they grow up so fast!!good luck and Happy Birthday to your son!!!!

I took my daughter to the park for her 1st b'day a few weeks ago. It was enclosed so no-one could disappear on us. Just add some balloons and streamers and the kids will have a ball.
Good luck

Parks are really great for party's, but if you want something private you can go a pizza parlor, and get a room thats closed off.You never go wrong with that.

Have a family gathering at a relatives' house. I don't think one if his grandparents or aunts would mind having a small celebration for him at their house. Just family only and make sure to do all the work as if you were having it at your own house.
