I have visited India one time, but visiting and living there are two different things...any suggestions as to what I need to bring from the US?

I am looking for some ideas on what I can't get there, but can bring from the US.

We are shipping all of our belongings and it makes sense to ship whatever it is - BIG or small - that we just can't get in India.

There have to be things that I won't be able to purchase there or would even be cheaper to purchase here and ship there -- everyone seems to think that we will be able to buy everything there and I just have this bad feeling that I am going to get there and end up wishing that I had packed a bottle of Vicks or something.

I really missed energy bars and nachos. Energy bars are good because I often found myself craving protein. Bangalore is probably the one place in India where you can find real nachos though. Just tell them to hold the masala sauce.

It might be worth getting some good hiking boots and backpack in the US, if you are into that kind of thing. Also, I really appreciated having some of those quick drying, highly breathable, moisture wicking shirts, hats, undergarments and socks that you can get from specialty outdoors retailers like Patagonia, Mountain Hardwear, and Marmot. Ditto for breathable rain gear. These things really rocked in the Indian climate and are excellent for travelling. Patagonia in particular has some very respectable clothes that are very well adapted to India's climate but don't make you look like you are on a perpetual outdoor safari. Make sure you get long pants and not shorts. They will likely have equivalent products there, but It might be difficult to find the same quality outdoor gear as in the US. Then again, maybe things have changed since I was there last.

Most everything else you can just get once you are there. Especially hold off on buying medicines. They are so much cheaper it makes you realize just how profoundly dysfunctional our health care system is here in the US.

Have fun in Bangalore. It sounds like a wonderful opportunity.

The only thing you might want to get it here might be peace and some pure oxygen. Except that you would find everything here.

Leave out your habits of travelling and hanging around late at night. Autorickshaws that dont have licence displays could be dangerous. Never venture into lonely areas day and night. Be there in the crowd. If you dont have these habits, bring it with you. Bring a bit of patience too and you could enjoy your time here.
