Cashiers, waitresses, pizza delivery people, mail carriers, pharmacy technicians, etc.
You are the face of the store, business, restaurant, etc.
Whatever it is that rude people are ticked off about is obviously your fault because you are the person they can see right now.
You may as well be the CEO of K Mart, because they can't fathom that you're role is to run the register. Not to program it or to dream up some weirdo store policy for the sole purpose of freaking them out. Just laugh at them and tell them that you are the flunky in this operation. I don't make the rules, I just live by them. You could sweetly offer to get the manager for them.
For the folks who do know that you have no input in the operational set up, they are miserable, and they are taking advantage of your status. They know that they can run their mouth without consequence, because you are there to serve them. Jerks. I hate customer service. Don't let them ruin your day.

Okay first of all a company can glean a TON of information from a postal code. It tells a company where you live within a very small parameter and thusly what kind of home you have and your approximate yearly income based on your residence. That, combined with the name on a credit or debit card pretty much tells the company every thing it needs to know about how to advertise to certain target groups.
Second, people are rude everywhere, it's nothing personal but some people are rude in the stores because the clerks act like it's a big inconvenience to help someone out. I do not tolerate being waved off or snapped at when I politely ask for help. The clerks are being paid to do a job and part of that job includes helping ME.

Because people don't like to think that KMart is watching what they buy. After all, it is KMart. They would rather that everyone thinks they buy all there stuff at a more expensive store.
Of course, in Britain, it is the other way around. The shop and store staff are the rude and mean people, and all the customers are all polite.
Perhaps we should get the American shop personnel together with the British shoppers, and have a perfect world.

I'd be pretty ticked if a store asked for ANY information from me. How is that any of their business? (If they do want the info they can give ME something in return--which many do with their point-saver cards which collect info on every last thing I buy.) I realize it's your job (or was) and I apologize if I ever took it out on you but really, I'm ticked just hearing KMart is asking that!
And most people shop at KMart because it's cheap, so no wonder they get mad if things don't come up as being on sale. Again, I know you don't program the cash register, but you should notice the problems and be in a position to rectify them.
If you're really so powerless that you can do nothing for the customer against the store rules, I can understand how frustrating that must be, but it does make it hard for people not to be mad, and it seems like you'd be the only obvious target. Sorry to say...I hope you have a better job now!

Most of them are so rude and mean because they are in a position, as limited as it may be, of power. Their tiny ostrich-like minds can't handle even the most miniscule amount of power without becoming overbearing and assinine. The rude and mean customer probably goes home and dresses in his wife's underwear or her childs diaper and begs someone to spank them. These are the same people who act as though they are conducting a hostile takeover of ENRON whenever they attempt to withdraw $20.00 out of the ATM machine.

Nowadays there's so much identity theft and scams going around, most people are afraid to offer any information. There are a lot of very bitter people as well, but if you can try to be understanding with people, you'll find that you will be better able to cope with these type of people. (Remember, you never know what's going on in someone's else's life).

Some people thrive on giving other people displeasure. They do it sometimes just to see how you will react. Others can't stand to see other people happy and will do their best to ruin your day. It's sad to think that people can be this way....but welcome to the real world!

Sometimes people just need someone to lash out at. Not fair, not justified, just someone to take their crap. It's easier to take it out on a stranger than on a loved one...
