I just dont understand what the big deal is. If there is supposed to be a separation of church and state, why does the state need to rule who marries who? I just will never understand it.

There are certainly enough unwed heterosexuals producing offspring out there, so why is there this need to keep gays from marrying?

Missingora just proved the point of my question. Not everyone is RELIGIOUS and not everyone believes in GOD, so just because some mythical person from long ago who hasnt been proven to exist said that marriage has to be between a man and a woman doesnt make it OKAY for the GOVERNMENT to say it also. THAT is my point, people.

Why do the beliefs of the bible have to be forced onto those who don't agree with it? Blah. I almost hate to bring up stuff like this but I do appreciate everyone's answers.

Good points, the government doesn't have any right to interfere in anyone's marriage. I happen to believe that few people are actually opposed to gay marriage because of the "sanctity of marriage" i think people are against it because there predjudiced and don't want to see gays getting the same benefits as married straight couples.
Also my vote for the 10 points is Ryan P.

Its more than religion. It involves insurence and court divorce proceedings and child custody and much much more. Gay couples have much higher rate or splitting up and getting together with others.
Besides that marriage is a long standing institution between a man and woman. The gov't isn't stopping gay relationships. It just results in nothing. produces no kids as heirs.
edit: well unwed gays are just like the unweds straight couples. So that doens't prove your point. If anything you are saying that it doesn't matter if they are allowed to marry.

Because the church's idea of marriage and the state's idea of marriage are separate (people can be legally married without going to a church). I think that the fact that the legal state and the spiritual state of marriage are called by the same name is the major problem. Perhaps if the government only allowed people to be "joined" on their tax returns, and let the church worry about whether they wanted to call it marriage or not, we wouldn't have this problem.

1) There is no such "rule" as the separation of church and state. That was promulgated by the media.
2) "Marriage" is a religious term. I see nothing (civilly) wrong with calling legal conjoining "Civil Union" for both hetro and homo pairings if your state wishes to make both ceremonies legal. It should be a "marriage" only if it takes place in a religious ceremony.

Can you find "separation of church and state" in the constitution? The word "marriage" refers to a union of one man to one woman. The BIG DEAL is that marriage is a sacred union and to have it desecrated by people who are living against the laws of nature and committing the sin of homosexuality (yes it's a sin! I didn't say it; God did!) is not something civilized, morally upright citizens want to see happen. And to say "whatever floats your boat" or "live and let live" is pretty naive. Those of us who are parents do not want our children to be taught that it's okay to disobey the laws of God. We don't want the schools to be teaching them that "Sally Has Two Mommies" because it's hard enough to raise children to be morally upright adults without the schools bending their minds with stupid, erroneous ideas. Homosexuality is a choice; a very warped choice, but a choice nevertheless. It helped destroy Soddom and Gomorrah and it still destroys people today. To condone it and to call a union of "gays" a marriage is sick!!!

Because gay marriages have not been talked about for many centuries and new ideas scare people; especially if those ideas are against the Constitution. Personally, I think marriage represents love and commitment and gay people should have the right to that priviledge.
If gay people are born that way, why should they have to suffer and have different rights. I am straight, but I have many gay friends who are better friends than non-gay people.

you dont have to religious to marry
marriage is a contract with the two people marrying and the state in which it is performed
divorce isnt done through the church either and without legal papers marriage in a church will not be recognized by the state either
marriage is not about religion, unless u choose to bring religion into your marriage

I say...if it makes you happy, go for it! Who are we to say it's wrong or right? I mean...what is right? We do immoral stuff all the time. Does that give someone the right to judge us? We live in America...we should all be free to do what we want. So why not marry who we love, even if others disagree?

I have heard many people complain about church & state.......they say you can't legislate morality.. thats a bunch of garbage. we legislate morality every day. polygamy is a crime. So is beastiality, necrophilia, underage drinking, drug use. There are certain rules to live in organized society, gay marriage doesn't fit the rules of our society. And it never has, people scream for tollerance no hate. they don't want tollerance they want acceptance.
Not in my lifetime

There is nothing wrong with gay marriage. I think that gay men should be able to marry gay women when ever they wish. I also think that there is nothing wrong with being gay, as long as you're a woman.
