I have this fear of dropping my keys in a storm drain.

Not death... not public speaking.... dropping my keys in a storm drain. I mean... what would you do if you dropped them in one of those things? They'd be gone forever. I can't walk over grates in the street or drains of any type without cringing and holding onto the keys in my pocket... any tips for me to get over this?

Do you have any weird fears?

I am terrified of spiders, but I don't think that is quite as weird as yours. Maybe you should get a carabiner and clip your keys onto your belt loop, so you don't have to worry about it. :)

That is not weird for me because I have the same fear. I am also afraid of dropping them into the hole in an elevator door. Ever thought of that one? I don't know what it is but, every time I go somewhere that has a drain or elevator, I will stop and check for my keys, or put my hand into my purse and make sure that they are there. Yes, they would be gone forever. I think that I'm afraid of not being able to get home from there and stuck someplace. I don't have an attachment to the keys so to speak, its just the thought of them falling into a hole.

It is because everytime you are near a Grate, you visualize your keys falling into the grate. This has occurred enough times that your mind is starting to believe that it has really happened.
What you need to do is this:
1. Sit in a room where you are comfortable, and close your eyes and begin thinking of something where you feel very safe, secure.
2. When you are "at" that moment, put your hands together and squeeze.
3. Perform this excercies a few times perhaps 6 times over a period of 1 week.
4. The next time you are near a grate, or even see a grate and begin experiencing your fear, put your hands together and squeeze. It will be only a matter of time and the fear will be gone!

Your fear isn't really about dropping the keys in the storm drain, it's actually about your fear of losing control of your life.
The keys control your car, which you drive, which gives you freedom.
The storm drain hole is the 'dark unknown' where your control disappears to if you drop the 'keys' down into it.

How about that, you're human.

Make a back up of all your keys and keep them with someone you trust. Then go drop your keys, and have the trusted person go make more backups then bring you your keys. Maybe once you see that it is a mere inconvenience and not a life altering event you will feel better. Also, just having a backup plan will make you feel better. You could also keep one of those long handled extend-a-magnet in your purse/pocket for shallow drains.

after what my fear is, nothing i hear about is strange, my worst fear is of either myself or someone else throwing up, it is my worst fear ever, not death, or anything else
i dont know if this will work but get yourself an extra set of keys, even 4 or 5 if that will help, that way, if you do drop them in the sink then youll have a bunch of extras

that fear does sound a little odd but you can make your key chain big and full of stuff so it won't fit down the drain and of course make sure you have back up keys............or keep them in a purse

My fear is choking on food sometimes I have a hard time swallowing like I can't get the food down freaks me out and I have to stop eating............now that is odd

How about you are on a boat and you drop your wallet? There's more than one way to lose something forever. Maybe if you think about it that way it may help. You should have spares and keep in mind that if you lose your keys you have new ones somewhere.

Keep your keys in your purse and don't walk over grates. Relax, they're only keys. Maybe you should keep spares on you at all times.
