Think Sherlock Holmes. Technically it's been around for a while, but talking about the kind of thing you see on TV, it's progressed to the point that there's so much technology, it's a specialty. Most college programs still call it "criminal justice," but just like an education degree, there are all kinds.

It's been around forever, but since the show came out, now there's more CSIs than ever. I guess it wasn't that popular until CBS made it look cool.
