A ton is not 12000 BTUs it is 12000 BTUs/hour.

Your 2 ton A/C unit is 24,000 BTUs per hour.

BTU is an energy unit. Ton is rate of energy (heat) transferred.

a ton means 12000 BTU / hr. the way they came up with such a crazy number is actually pretty simple. one ton/hr of a/c or refrigeration is equal to the cooling effect of one ton of ice being melted in the same period of time.

2 tons means how much air it blows not really BTU's. To determine how much would be right for your house would be to determine how much cubic space in you have in your house.
