I'm a trombone playing the chello part. It's not like an improvished jazz solo.; I'm playing twenty measures alone. The melody! Any recomendations? Should I get someone to play with me? Should I bow out and have them abridge the song to the part where the rest of the orchestra/esamble plays?

Somebody must think you are up to it, so rise to the challenge and show them what you can do! Consider the worst case scenario, who is in the audience? Does it really matter if you make a mistake? Most likely not, it's just band camp, not Carnegie Hall. If you mess it up, can you cover for it so that only you and the band know? I bet you can. Go for it, assume that you were selected because you CAN do it, and do it with confidence.

You are obviously talented or you wouldn't have been invited to be part of the ensemble. Just cut loose...do what you've always done when you are goofing around. The beauty of jazz is that it is truly personal and nothing is wrong. I bet you'll be awesome.
