Actually, maybe it's an impropriety, but I have several questions about D.C.

Why isn't Washington D.C. a state?

What do the license plates of vehicles there say? I mean, being that it isn't a state?

Why isn't it a state? Not that size matters...LOL...but it's bigger than Rhode Island, yeah?

The police force- like that officer who was brutally assaulted by the evil buhbitch Cynthia McKinney...whom do they work for? I mean, if D.C. isn't a state, then who is their government?

Okay, enough questions for now. : )

Basically, the Federal government runs Washington D.C., since it is a Federal district. The Constitution empowers Congress to act sort of like a city council for Washington D.C. Congress has delegated a lot of their power to an actual city government in Washington, which is the source of the D.C. police force. Still, Congress can jump in and legislate city matters when they want. This special relationship between Congress and D.C. creates a lot of interesting Supreme Court cases.

To answer your other questions:

I think the main reason D.C. isn't a state is because the Federal government wants to maintain exclusive control over it. If it became a state, the Feds would have to share power with a state government. It would also give the newly formed state a huge advantage over the rest of the states, since it would hold the seat of the national government. That's one reason why a separate Federal territory was created to begin with.

I think the license plates say "Celebrate and Discover" and "Washington DC" with little red stripes. There is also a custom plate that says "Taxation without Representation"

The police either work for the city or Federal government, depending on what police force it is. All are ultimately accountable to the Federal government.

not one of the above or all the above--that's a multitude. that's a "District" of the USA, so like a territory it has some self governance yet is unquestionably decrease than the administration of Congress. citizens of DC are not getting representation interior the Senate, and basically one representative interior the homestead (i'm unsure if that rep is permitted to vote). it is likewise a city--it elects a mayor and council and makes regulations for itself. specific aspects of the city, even with the undeniable fact that, do no longer fall decrease than the administration of DC government--federal aspects, the monuments on the Mall, and so on are monitored via the Capitol Police and Congress. 'Taxation devoid of representation' is a motto that seems on DC license plates as a result. they have little or no say interior the government that taxes them and in many techniques governs them.

DUH and i am no even going to go into why it is not a state... does it really not make any sense to you why the Nation's Capital is not in a state? and i dont know about population but check your map again.... pretty sure it is NOT bigger than rhode island

Most of your questions have already been answered, so I won't get into that, but I would like to correct you about something. DC is not bigger then Rhode Island. Rhode Island is bigger in area and in population. DC is not bigger than any state as far as area goes, but in population it is larger than Wyoming.

The DC police. Police are run by the citys not the state.

It was not to keep any one state from having to much power.

Dc is a city on to it self.
