I feel that it harmed. So many people listen to and emulate celebrities. Last year, when he was going around criticizing psychiatry, I wonder how many people thought, "Tom Cruise says I don't have to, so I won't take my meds." It just goes to show you how powerful the media is. Some people are more likely to listen to their televisions than their physicians.

I personally do not like Tom Cruise now. Tom Cruise movies that I previous enjoyed, I can no longer watch. I also have not seen any new Tom Cruise movies in the past year (any that were released in the theater, on DVD, or HBO). The sight of him now sickens me because he is so arrogant and he criticizes anyone with a mental illness who seeks pharmacological help. He doesn't have an MD or a PhD after his name, but he can proclaim, without evidence that chemical imbalances do not exist (despite thousands of peer-reviewed, empirical studies to say otherwise) and that people would be cured with exercise and vitamins. I want to run my own study. I think we should round up a bunch of schizophrenics, put them on a vitamin-exercise regimen for a few months and then ask them to camp out on his front lawn.

Tom Cruise is an insane Scientologist.

Psychiatry is a legitimate science. I have known many people - myself included - who have been helped by it.

who cares about tom cruise? he should be seeing a shrink to deal with his insecurities. poor katie, what has she gotten herself into?

psychiatry or psychology or whatever you want to call it benefits those who try to seek it. just don't abuse the concept.

oh, caveat! beware of some psych practitioners who are loonies themselves. better check with the medical association if you're shrink is legit or not.

Ifeel it can help some people, but it depends on the Psychiatrist, you do have some that try to play God with people lives, so it will all depend.

Why should his opinion matter to you? Psychiatry helps but it can tell you things which you are unwilling to accept. That is the rub.
