A motor mount sits between to motor and the frame. Usually, it is made of a hard rubber that acts as an insulator for vibrations in the engine compartment.

A bad motor mount can cause your engine to fall out of alignment with your transmission, as well as cause it to shake and vibrate more than it is designed for.

Excessive vibrating and shaking may eventually cause other components attached to the motor to fail - waterpump, alternator, hose clamps, etc.

On a front wheel drive if you don't have motor mounts your engine will fall

On a rear wheel drive you should have both
BUT
you can get away with not bolting the right side mount down cause the torque side is the drivers side
but it's best not to try this if you don't know what your doing

used to race and all we used was chain to make for quick engine swaps

The motor mount attaches the engine to the car. If you have a bad one, you will feel the virbration of the engine throughour your body. It is the invention of Henry Chrysler. Prior to his putting these "shock absorbers" between the engine and the frame of a car, the engines were bolted directly onto the frame and since no owner knew any better they accepted the shaking.

Henry called it "floating power" and it plus a million other advantages enabled his new low-priced car--the Plymouth--to put a world of hurt to Henry Ford--who was turning out crap then just as his grandson does today.

Mounts the motor to the car. If it is bad, the motor will not be mounted properly.

motor mount is exactly what it says, they are brackets that hold the motor in place.

if your motor mount is broken or the rubber boot has worn off there are a few issues, the motor can twist breaking your transmission or drivetrain. or it can break your exhaust manifolds.

so the main thing is that with a broken motor mount the engine is no longer stable against the force.

Excessive Vibrations. If the Motor Mounts break on a car, the results could be fatal. :-(

it holds your motor from falling on the ground.
when you shift and hit the gas and drive, the motor vibrates and rocks, the motor mounts hold it in place
with a bad motor mount, you could hit a wrong bump and lose your motor on the road.

It keeps the engine in the chassis, sweet. I would recommend fixing it.
