Hi Samir:
Basically, it's just a screening, but for a select audience. Sometimes it's an incomplete cut of the film, and sometimes it's the daily rushes, run solely for the director (and sometimes for cast members). There is another type of screening, and that is a advance showing of a film. This can be for an invited audience, as in a fund-raiser, or a sneak preview, to get audience reaction to the film, which is shown only the once and then taken back for further editing, cutting, dubbing or whatever else it needs to improve it.
The other definition of a movie screening is simply projecting the movie onto the screen, as is done every single day in every single movie theatre. So depending on how the phrase is used, you have a variety of meanings for it.
Hope this answers your question.

Sometimes before a theatrical release they will do test audiences and ask for feedback to see how well the movie will likely do. Also some theaters get to do special screenings just before the movie is released. This gives them time to do special promotions and make a lot of money. Many of the red carpet things before a movie comes out are called screenings since the movie isn't offically released but it helps to promote the movie when it does.

It is when you see a rough draft of a movie before it is completely edited and fully cut and can provide your opinion on the film-this screening is sometimes 2-6 months before theatrical release(test audience), then there is the early screening which occurs a week or 2 before release(sneak preview) and this people get special passes from newspapers, contests, etc. usually the press is invited to these and can do their write ups in advance.
I have been to three rough cuts as a test audience memeber, Miami Vice 2months ago, the Crucible and Interview with a Vampire, usually the score isn't even in the film yet.

A movie screening is a 'sneak preview' of a film refers to several different things:
An opportunity for the media, critics and often awards committees can sit and watch a film before it is released to the general public.
A showing where the producers of a movie who wish to know how the public will accept their film can display it to a random selection of people to watch it and give their opinion. This is often done for length and content.
Also, it could be a screening for the MPAA (the people who assign movie ratings) can watch it and do what they do...

That's when they show the movie to critics and a select few from the general public, typically the day before it is released to the masses.

It's a showing of the movie for a particular audience. It's a fancy way of saying "they are watching a movie that not everyone else can watch yet"
