Whats the story behind it too? Is it to keep your clothes clean for those who cant wipe well? Why should us good wipers be punished?

Warmth. Modesty. Even if you wipe well, you could have leakage. It absorbs any sweat. Your clothes stay cleaner.
Underwear originated from before most clothes were made of soft and comfortable materials to prevent chafing.

because clothing by itself is not comfortable. as others mentioned you have the zipper which can be very bad for a man. But you also have the rough sewn areas of the clothes that don't feel that good when rubbed against delicate parts.

No one said you HAVE to wear underwear. That is your choice.
But I would think you might want to revisit the bathroom scene in the movie "There's something about Mary" to understand why guys wear underwear.
