Ok before Ballack & Shevchenko Have a look at some of his signings…

Del horno, Tiago, kezman, wright phillips, maniche (ok he had a good world cup but failed in the premiership though!), Jarosic, smirton oh & Drogba (who hasn’t exactly turned out to be the next Henry like they all said he would do, he’s way to clumsy!)

Essien didn’t exactly light up the premiership last season either, he spent more of his time doing x rated tackles!

Carvalho & Ferreira are doing ok but everyone knows Chelsea’s best defenders are Gallas & Terry

Chelsea’s best players last season where Cech, Terry, Makelle, Cole & Lampard none of these where bought by Mourinho.

The season before that add Duff & Robben to that list & once again Mourinho had nothing to do with these transfers.

Michael Essien is a very good player, he will perform much better this season. Unless Michael Ballack gets in the way. Didier Drogba has not exactly been a flop. Although he is a diver.

Drogba is a very good player.
For sure he is not the new Henry (who said that ?) but he is better to score goals with the head, he can take pressure from defenders and then pass the ball, and has some speed, but not the technic and the "touch" of Henry.
Don't forget that is was his first year in England; Henry has not been outstanding the first six months in Arsenal. And Drogba is that kind of player who need to play very often to be at their best(like Cissé in Liverpool).

Wright Phillips is a talented player, still very young who should play more to improve his skills.

The best signing will be Sheva !

Mourinho was lucky to inherit a very good squad from Rainieri, but his man-management style has enabled them to gel into the all-conquering team that they have become, and while he hasn't signed any great players pre-Ballack/Shevchenko, but the signings he has made have been world class as back-ups and rotation players.

I honestly never though of it like that but now that you mention it I think your spot on, most of his transfers have been way over priced and never realy lived up to the fees.
