I might suspect a girl is a hippie if she:
A. mentions a recent Rainbow gathering.
B. can't stop talking about the Dead or Phish.
C. the persistent aroma of patchouli.
D. nuditiy in the kitchen.
E. a healthy sexual appetite and the ability to enjoy it greatly.
F. a fondness for tofu dishes.
G. possessing one or more of the following items:
a political bumpersticker,
a bar of hemp soap,
a crystal,
and/or a boyfriend or girlfriend whose hair is in dreads.

These are just a few of the things that would make me think someone is a hippie. Hippies are no more difficult to get along with than anyone else. If anything, they can be a lot of fun because they are such free spirits.

I think hippie means free spirited, not into climbing the social or corporate ladders, probably smokes pot and dresses 'comfortable'. This description is equally good and bad. Some will think it is cool, others will think it decribes a slacker.

Additionally some people will automatically wonder if the person showers everyday, eats meat,or is into Saving something (the earth, an animal, etc.) when the term Hippie is used. VW Buses roll through my mind, too, along with visions of long skirts and silver rings, scented with lots of incents.

It means she actually has feminine curves. A lot of men find that attractive, some don't. I have been described as "hippie" because I have an hour glass figure. I like my curves.

Or it could be a reference to the 60s hippie movement, the whole make love not war, peace dude, tie dyed shirt thing.

I don't know anything about your friend, but she's probably a hippie if she's very eco-aware, has a taste for alternative rock, has loooooooong straight hair, looks a tad grubby, clad from head-to-toe in peace signs and anti-war slogans, and possibly is into a little hemp. :P

If she's a hippie that's actually TRYING to make the world a better place instead of just SAYING that she is, there's no reason why "hippie" should be a derogatory word.

I love hippie girls...hence my OWN name "Bohemianboi"..although, I'm not sure if you mean "hippie" as in a girl that has curves to her hips, or "hippie" as in the hippie culture. I don't think being a hippie is a bad thing at ALL. Here's some generalizations about hippies, and after reading it, see if your friend maybe fits this description.

term originally used to describe some of the rebellious youth of the 1960s, although the dawn of the 21st century has brought with it a neo-hippie movement, holding similar beliefs and values as the hippies of the 1960s.
Many hippies expressed their desire for change during the 1960's by renouncing corportate influence (meaning they were against the government or "the man") consumerism (many believe in living off the land or using only organic materials) and they were against the Vietnam War (make love, not war)
Many embraced NON Judeo-Christian religous cultures and instead turned to more Eastern religious influence by such things as Zen, Buddhism and more meditation based philosophies.

Your friend however, is probably more of a NEO-HIPPIE, meaning it derived it's influence from the original hippies of the 1960's, however, because many of them are into more of making a fashion statement than participating in an anti materialist movement. They are your typical "dead heads" "Phish heads" and wear dreadlocks accented with glass beads in their hair and things of that nature. While there are references to the peace and justice movements demonstrated by the original hippies of the 60's , neo-hippies have engaged in the civil disobedience or demonstrating to oppose the Iraq War and Patriot Acts I and II. Hippies often promote organic farming, growing one's own food, making clothes by hand and "living off the (electrical) grid"
Drug usage is just as accepted as in the "original" hippie days, although it is not considered necessary to take drugs in order to be part of the lifestyle. Some modern hippies frown upon excessive drug use because of lessons learned from the past.
Neo-hippies of today are usually found attending music and art festivals around the United States. The bands performing at the festivals are usually called "Jam Bands" because many of their songs contain long instrumental jams. The jams are similar to music performed by the original 1960s hippie bands such as Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd, Grateful Dead, Allman Brothers Band, Carlos Santana, Big Brother, and Jefferson Airplane. The modern jam bands play a fusion of all musical genres including rock, blues, jazz, bluegrass, funk, reggae, prog-rock, folk, and hip-hop. Psychedelic Trance music is also a common music preference for hippies around the world. Psychedelic Trance festivals last up to seven days and typically take place in the summer months.
