I was just wondering if you eat very little sugar and have very little caffine when pregnant will it help with having a calm baby. I have seen people with really calm babies, babies that didn't cry much or enjoyed being held. Is this because of the diet the parents followed when pregnant? Does anyone really know if no or very little sugar intake while pregnant has anything to do with the way a child may act or will act when they are born or the way they will act when they get older? I have 2 children who I really didn't follow a diet while pregnant, who are calm at times but also quite a fussy at times. (as i am sure this is true for other parents, who have children) I hope this does not seem like a dumb question.

Diet has no effect on the personality or temperament of your baby. For an extreme example of this, think of all the cultures that regularly eat very spicy food - for instance the Thai people. They have calm babies, fussy babies and everything in between.

I have been pregnant three times now and eat a similar diet everytime and every child has a different temperament.

I read in a baby magazine recently that eating lots of veggies and other healthy stuff might increase the likelihood of having a child with healthy eating habits, but I know of NO studies which actually back this up. Just like they are now admitting that starting your baby on green peas before bananas will not ensure that they will develop a taste for veggies.

The only way we affect our baby with what we eat when pregnant is when we consume harmful foods (contaminated, fish with high levels of mercury, too much aspartame, too much junk food, etc.).

We are what we are when born and then our environment further shapes us! And that's when diet really becomes influential - after your baby is born.

I would say it is more genetics than anything else, my sister was always a very calm child and slept a lot! and her daughter is the same, she sleeps a lot and she is very calm, not to mention that my sister is a coca cola fan and never quit drinking that while she was pregnant. However I have a friend who did drugs, drank mountain dew, smoked cigarretes and ate fast food all through her pregnancy, and her child is the most annoying things you will ever meet. She is almost 3 years old and she won't talk, she screams! she does not sleep throught the night and she is overall a hell baby! I can't really blame the child because it was born addicted to nicotine, caffeine and POT! so I would say if you go extreme on the things you know you are suppossed to avoid then that could definitely affect the baby.
