it has a generator not an alternator and if i remember it is the voltage regulator that controles it you field it to change it from positive to negitave
as how to tell its hard as the batery probally isnt there if the starter still works put 6 volts to it it will spin backwords or frontwords and it wont hurt it what ever way you hook it up to spin it forward thats the way it is

almost every car has a negative ground. Most 1928 models had generators, not alternators (differentiated by DC or AC).

the simple answer is see where your battery is connected. If the positive is connected to the chassis of your vehicles, then you have positive ground. You can also use a voltmeter. If you put your positive probe on the chassis and the negative on your battery output, then you have a positive ground. Again, this is rare.

preform a voltage test on the ground wire a positive ground will show voltage a negative ground will not this is done by using a multi meter buy one from your local parts store for about 20 bucks
