I have 3 of them (they're around 12 yrs old) and I think I started feeding them feeder fish when they were around 3 - 4 inches long. The small feeder fish of course but I've heard you're not supposed to feed them just that. You still need to provide them with the pellets or floating sticks. They're a hardy breed and an easy turtle species to care for. But if I could go back, I would've definitely picked a tortoise instead.

1. Baby red-ears need at least 10 gallons of swimming space per inch of shell. is the tank big enough?
2. Red-ears are a very messy pet. Will the filters handle the load? You usually need 50-100% more filtration than you do for fish.
3. Red-ears eat fish, and tend to nip at or torment fish that are too big for food, unless the tank is really big.
4. Red-ears like water temps of 85 and need basking sites around 90 degrees. Can your fish live with that?
5. Your Red-ear needs UV lighting, specifically UV-B. It will not penetrate glass, so sunlight won't work. Are you set up for that?
Bottom line: this CAN work if you are prepared for it, but it is tough. Turtle are tougher pets than goldfish to start with, and trying ot do both well can be tricky.

Yes but when the turtle gets bigger you should take the gold fish out so the turtle does not eat it

We have two beautiful red-eared sliders. At our pet store they sell gold fish to feed the turtles. We don't buy them though. I can't imagine watching that. I do feed them crickets sometimes though. Hope this helps.

feeder fish sometimes carry dieases-sometimes! you can feed them anachris....crickets (pure protien...thats what i did and and a few months later that baby was adult size) they dance on the water and its easier for the to get only put in a few to see if he likes it...
romaine lettuce not iceberg.
if you need a got filtration system. make sure you can get on that can filter mechincal, biological and chemical.....and that its underwater with a pretty decent flow to circulate the water.....you can also buy like a chemical break down that is safe for turtle that you can put in the tank.....anything more just read a book....or go to a pet store
